Why have we chosen Lowline Angus? There are plenty of reasons why we started with our lowline angus herd. It took a lot of research to find out the best cattle to raise in our farm. Our farm is located in Tiller, Oregon about 3000 feet elevation. Our choice of finding the right cattle for our farm was zero to none because of these two reasons. We have a lot of grass in spring but all dries up in summer. We have water but only seasonal and dries up by June. So we thought, we have grass but no irrigation. We have water but only seasonal. It was a very tuff choice for us.
It took us two years before we finally found the answer. At first, we considered one of the smaller cattle because they are small and fairly inexpensive to start with. But my concern was that they have horns, which made me think of my daughter. Then I saw a Lowline angus add for sale in Craigslist. It got me very interested because it is an Angus which my wife and I always wanted to raise. However, it is depressing at first because they are very expensive. But it didn’t stop us from getting a herd because we see the potential they offer to our farm. We saw the balance of bringing Lowline angus to our farm and the business model we are trying to build. Lowline angus is a breed of choice for our farm and a cattle business that have a bright future. I can say now that looking back from three years ago, Lowline angus was the right choice for our farm and a great choice for our cattle business.
If you are interested in raising your own lowlines and would like to know more about them, just email me or give me a call. I would be happy to answer any of your questions. For more information about Lowlines angus, go to American Lowline Registry at http://www.usa-lowline.org.
